Our puppies are $680. That sits below the range usually quoted for Yorkies, and we explain why further down rather than leaving you to guess.

What Yorkie puppies cost, by where you get them

What Yorkie puppies cost depends more on where you buy than on the puppy itself.

Typical US ranges as of 2026. They move with region, demand and season — expect the top of each band around the holidays.

Purchase price only. Delivery and first-year costs are separate.
SourceTypical priceWhat you are paying for
Show / champion bloodline breeder$2,500 – $5,000+Documented pedigree, health-tested parents, conformation to standard. Aimed at people who intend to show or breed.
Established AKC hobby breeder$1,500 – $3,000Registered parents, health screening, structured socialisation, waiting lists.
Small home breeder$600 – $1,500Home-raised, vet checked, vaccinated. Pedigree paperwork varies. Where we sit.
Broker or puppy marketplace$1,800 – $4,000Convenience and volume. You rarely learn who actually bred the puppy.
Breed-specific rescue$150 – $600Adoption fee covering vetting. Usually adults rather than puppies.
Suspiciously cheap listingUnder $400Usually nothing. See our guide to puppy scams.

What actually drives what Yorkie puppies cost

Four things move the number. None of them is the puppy being “better”.

FactorEffectWorth paying for?
Health-tested parentsRaises priceYes. The item most correlated with lower vet bills later.
Documented pedigree / AKC papersRaises price significantlyOnly if you intend to show or breed. Irrelevant to a companion dog’s health or temperament.
Time spent socialisingRaises priceYes. Hard to see on a listing, enormous difference at home.
“Teacup” marketingRaises price sharplyNo. A premium for elevated health risk. Read why.
Rare colour claimsRaises price sharplyUsually no. Often a marketing label, and some colour lines carry coat and skin problems.
Female rather than maleOften $100–$300 moreConvention, not substance. The differences are smaller than people expect.
Region and local demandVaries widelyReal, but delivery often costs less than the regional premium.

What the price should include

Compare like for like. A $1,400 puppy with everything below included can be better value than a $900 puppy where vaccinations and the travel crate are extra.

  • Examination by a licensed veterinarian before release
  • Vaccinations completed to date, with records
  • Deworming history
  • A written health guarantee you can read before paying
  • A signed adoption agreement
  • Some of the food the puppy is already eating
  • Access to the breeder after you take the puppy home

“What is the total I will pay, delivered to my door, with nothing else to come?” Get it in writing. Vagueness here is the most common precursor to surprise fees.

What Yorkie puppies cost in the first year

The purchase price is the smallest part of what Yorkie puppies cost in year one.

The number most buyers underestimate. Typical US ranges for a toy breed — urban vets and groomers sit at the top. For a second opinion on the annual figures, the AKC publishes its own breakdown of the true cost of owning a dog.

Year one, excluding the purchase price
ItemTypical costNotes
Remaining puppy vaccinations$75 – $200One or two boosters after you take over
Rabies vaccination$20 – $50Legally required in most states
Spay or neuter$150 – $600Toy breeds often need extra anaesthetic care
Microchip$25 – $60We arrange this at cost on request
Wellness visits$150 – $350Two to three in the first year
Flea, tick, heartworm prevention$120 – $250Year round in most of the country
Food$200 – $400Small quantities — quality matters more than volume
Professional grooming$400 – $900Every 6–8 weeks. Yorkie coats are hair, not fur, and never stop growing
Crate, bed, bowls, carrier, harness$150 – $350Mostly one-off
Toys and chews$80 – $200Ongoing
Training class$0 – $250Optional, worth it for a first-time owner
Pet insurance$250 – $650Optional. Toy breeds have real orthopaedic and dental exposure
First-year total$1,620 – $4,260Plus the purchase price

Worked example

A family buys a $680 puppy from us with $350 flight-nanny delivery to Chicago. Mid-range care: $180 vaccinations, $400 spay, $50 microchip, $250 wellness visits, $180 preventatives, $300 food, $650 grooming, $250 equipment, $120 toys, $150 training, no insurance.

Year one total: roughly $3,560. The puppy was 19% of it.

The line people forget

Grooming. A Yorkie coat needs professional attention every six to eight weeks for the dog’s whole life. Over fifteen years that is frequently more than you paid for the dog. Budget for it before you commit.

What Yorkie puppies cost over a lifetime

Across fifteen years, what Yorkie puppies cost is dominated by veterinary care, not the breeder.

Yorkshire Terriers commonly live 12–16 years — one of the longer-lived breeds.

StageTypical annual cost
Year 1$1,620 – $4,260
Years 2–8 (adult)$1,100 – $2,400
Years 9+ (senior)$1,400 – $3,500 — dental and joint care rise
Estimated lifetime$17,000 – $38,000

We publish this because a family who has budgeted properly keeps the dog. A family surprised in year three does not, and that is how Yorkies end up in rescue.

Why a cheap puppy often costs more in the end

The cheapest listings usually raise what Yorkie puppies cost once the vet bills arrive.

Under-priced puppies usually come from operations that saved money somewhere, and the saving is almost always veterinary care, socialisation or the mother’s health.

What was skippedWhat it can cost you later
Parent health screeningLuxating patella surgery $1,500–$5,000 per knee. Liver shunt surgery $3,000–$8,000
Early socialisationFear-based reactivity. Behaviourist work $500–$2,000 with no guaranteed outcome
Releasing the puppy too youngHypoglycaemia episodes, emergency visits $300–$1,200 each
Veterinary examination before saleUndetected parasites, kennel cough, congenital defects

Why ours are $680

Ours sit below what Yorkie puppies cost almost anywhere else, and we explain exactly why.

A fair question given the ranges above, and one you should ask any breeder priced below market.

We are a small home operation with low overheads. No kennel facility, no broker commissions, no show programme — so we are not recovering those costs. We breed to the AKC standard for companion homes rather than the ring, so we are not charging a pedigree premium.

What we do not cut: the veterinary examination, the vaccination schedule, holding puppies to twelve weeks, and the daily handling that makes the difference at your end. Those are the expensive parts in time, and they are the parts that matter.

What is not included

Delivery is quoted separately — see our delivery guide. Microchipping is arranged on request at cost. Everything under “what the price should include” is covered.

Questions about what Yorkie puppies cost

The questions families ask most about what Yorkie puppies cost.

Why are teacup Yorkies more expensive?

Because they are marketed as rare. Extremely undersized Yorkies carry higher risk of hypoglycaemia, dental crowding, fragile bones and anaesthetic complications. You are paying a premium for a dog statistically more likely to need expensive care.

Is a more expensive puppy a healthier puppy?

Not automatically, but price correlates with health testing, and health testing correlates with outcomes. What you want to identify is why a puppy costs what it does. A high price with no health screening behind it is just a high price.

Should I get pet insurance for a Yorkie?

Worth considering. Yorkies have known exposure to luxating patella, dental disease, tracheal collapse and liver shunt. If a sudden $4,000 bill would be a genuine problem, insurance is reasonable. Enrol while the dog is young, before anything becomes pre-existing.

Can I negotiate on price?

With us, not usually — the price already sits below the market band. Be wary of any breeder who drops sharply under mild pressure. It suggests the number was arbitrary, or that they need the sale more than the right home.

Is $680 too cheap to be legitimate?

A reasonable question and we would rather you asked it. Our answer is above. The better test is not the number but the process: ask for fresh photographs of the exact puppy, read the contract before you pay, and use the 14-day guarantee.
